A resident in ORIGIN lives in a world that answers only yes or no. A mark is shown. A consequence follows, or it does not. Research asks: from that feedback alone, what kind of memory can learn which two clues warn of a consequence? We compare methods. We keep every verdict, including the ones we had to take back.ORIGIN Un residente en ORIGIN vive en un mundo que solo responde sí o no. This test is not looking for the most similar old conversation. It keeps a small ledger: when two clues appear together, that pair gets a number; each yes or no moves the number. When a new combination appears, it adds the relevant numbers and decides only if they cross a threshold. The question is whether this ledger can learn a hidden rule better than fetching old text and asking a language model to repeat it.
The other method is the strongest lookup we have: keep the old writing, and ask a language model to replay what it has seen, with extra weight on the recent. Before that, a third method was already measured and dropped: it tried to remember by overall resemblance, and lost to a plain text buffer (58.9% vs 64.1%) because noise overlap (278) beat the signal (152). So the remaining question is sharp: can an honest counter beat the best lookup in the room?

The test ran eighty meetings, three methods side by side. A stranger is dangerous only when the mark shows both ◆ and ▼. The symbols themselves mean nothing until the world answers yes or no. Same world, same strangers, same language model: one method counts which two clues appear together, one looks up old writing, and one judges by overall resemblance. The learners never see the hidden rule; you do. The rule we set in advance: beat the text lookup by at least 0.5 percentage points, or this design is not worth building. El experimento corrió ochenta encuentros, tres brazos lado a lado. The gap is far beyond the stopping condition, and it appears early: at thirty samples the counter read the hidden law at 94.6% and generalized to unseen marks at 100%. E2 asked a narrower question: if the world’s rule quietly changes, does a learner need a special “forget” setting to catch up? We first published a strong no. Then a second, independent program found a bug in the first one. We took that verdict back.E2 问得更窄:如果世界的规则悄悄变了,学习者是否需要专门的“忘记”设定才能跟上? The implementation had a bug. When decay pulled a weight to zero, the unit was deleted — but a memory counts its keys, so learned and evidence-neutral became never learned, and coverage collapsed to nothing. A second implementation, built in isolation, kept its zeroes and reached the opposite conclusion. We withdrew the verdict: “the fault was mine.” A zero is not the same as “never learned.” Having an entry means this pair was taught; the number says how strongly. Zero means taught, but the current evidence is even — not “delete me.” The first program deleted zeros, so it looked as if forgetting wiped memory. The second kept zeros and reached the opposite conclusion. The corrected verdict, over 48 paired seeds, is better science and a better design: decay reaches competence two to four times sooner (paired median 28.0 at 80 episodes, 138.0 at 400, p < 0.00001) — and the original premise still stands. No mechanism at all recovers 48/48 under every drift tested. The lesson changed the design. The age threshold (age ≥ 72) was retired in favor of epoch rotation — 32/32 recovery, median 27 episodes, reproduced number for number — and then replaced by the version-space certificate: maintain the set of hypotheses consistent with every observed label; when only one verdict remains, maturity is proven, and a single contradiction falsifies the epoch. Logical proof where a number used to stand.

Generative Agents combines access-based recency, importance, and relevance when it retrieves memories, and its interview ablations use histories accumulated by the full architecture. That makes it a useful comparison for separating a shared-history decision probe from a full-trajectory intervention. It does not validate this ORIGIN result. Reflexion changes later context through textual feedback rather than changing the base-model weights. Its WebShop appendix also records a setting where the attempted improvement did not materialize. That mechanism and that limit are reasons to test memory as a conditional intervention, not assume it always helps. The tasks and trial structure differ from this apparatus. For a later empirical study, the number of runs must follow the inferential question and justified assumptions. Precision planning needs a target interval width and an account of variability; no paper supplies a universal sufficient number of ORIGIN runs. One implementation detail — keep the zero or delete the zero — flipped an entire conclusion. The record keeps the mistake in place on purpose. The experiments sit on a wider evidence library. research/memory/ holds the working record — experiment logs, red-team attacks, external rulings, and corrected verdicts kept as they happened — and the project's cultural memory work draws on a corpus of creation and flood traditions: more than 200 traditions collected across cultures, the oldest recorded answers to “what happened at the beginning?”. Roughly 39 GB have been gathered so far, about a fifth of the 200–300 GB target. The finite-memory report is different: its figures are derived from saved values, its source and runtime remain private, and independent reproduction is not complete. Other entries keep their own evidence boundary.
